Does anyone know if the 4310R or the 4350R will work as a standard external enclosure for use with a smartarray controller (like a Smart Array 431 or 5i)?

I have some 1.6" ultra3 disks and so I need an enclosure that will hold these, to connect to a Proliant DL360.

OR, does anyone know if I can just put these 1.6" drives into a 4314R or 4354R and just lose density (the 4314/54 were intended for 1.0" drives).

Thank you,

The 4310R and 4350R are just standard external enclosures. They'll work fine with a smart array card.
I don't think you can put 1.6" drives in them, but I can be wrong.
Other way around is fine, you just need a .6" dummy to regulate airflow.

The 4310 and 4350 have been designed to take the 1.6" Drives. You can also use the 1" drives in the enclosure by using an adaptor from HP/Compaq

Thanks for the tip! Every "private citizen" I've talked to says that the 4350R is connectable to any SCSI controller (like a smartarray). But the compaq web site clearly says that it is not compatible. I'm wondering whethr I need to get the 4354R which they say is compatible on the web site, or whether the web site is garbage post-HP merger?
thanks,

Jeffrey

Mr. Lee,

The 4310r and the 4350r use the HSG80 controller which goes in the MA2200. You would connect this through a switch and a KGPSA controller which would be in the DL360

See the following URL questions 29 and 33

COMMENTS:
I need to know how to attach the Storageworks 4310R or 4350R (preferred 4350R) to a Compaq Proliant DL360. The DL360 currently has an integrated smart array controller I understand I may need to replace this. I intend to put in 4 72.6 GB drives into the enclosure, model #176494-B21

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Lee

The reason the 4310/4350 shelves are not supported on the SmartArray's is that they were never qualified, they were only qualified on the HSG80 (an external Raid Controller).

I should have also said that they will almost certainly work, they are just not supported.
