Hi all. I’m really hoping you guys can help me with this one. It’s a really annoying problem that has stopped me from playing DVDs (either from my hard drive or from my DVD drive) with my computer.

First off, here are my specs:
Windows XP Pro SP2
AMD Athlon 64 3700+
EPOX EP-8KDA31 Motherboard
3 Gigs RAM
NVidia GeForce 6200

I have anti-virus and anti-spam software installed, updated and running.

So, I’ll start to play a movie that’s already stored in my hard drive. The programs used have been VLC media player or PowerDVD. When the movie is playing, it plays great. There are no video/audio glitches or freezes. The computer essentially runs great. If I minimize the movie, the computer is fine.

As soon as I stop the movie, the computer freezes. No mouse, no keyboard, nothing. The only way to get out of it is to restart the computer.

I have looked in the event viewer hoping for some trace of what is going on, in addition hoping for a message stating that the computer has just recovered from a serious error.

I get no messages and I have found no sign of any kind of shutdown message.

Help!

Hi JonBro

is there a bios update for you mobo?

Trevor

Possibly...I'll check on that. Do you think it may be a BIOS problem?

Hi JonBro

I looked up your mobo and there are quite a few bos updates, i would start treating it as a hardware issue because the reaction you describe sound like hardware to me, also 2 diff softwares vlc and power dvd.
