stopping sendmail takes long time?

Is there an easy explanation as to why our Sendmail takes about 15 attempts to stop it? We're on RedHat 6.2 and only have about 70 virtual hosts on that machines. When we want to restart it we have to issue ./sendmail stop about 10 - 20 times before it stops.

Any ideas anyone?
