Hi - We have two win 2000 member servers in a Windows NT domain (with NT domain controllers). We want to stop the W2K servers winning browser elections, but still be browsers. We have tried this registry fiddle:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\MaintainServerList="No"
but the browser service then refuses to start. Our backup s/w relies on the browser service.

Is there a way to stop the Win 2000 server winning browser elections, without killing their browser service?

Set up one of your servers to be the Master Browser - You can find the setting in the Registry:

HKLM_System_CurrentControlSet_Services_Browser_Parameters
IsDomainMaster True for the Server you want to be Master Browser, False for Everything else.

If memory serves the 3 values for the above key are Auto(default), True or False

But leave the value for Maintain server list to yes.
