GroupWise 6 problem:
We use various Dell Optiplex workstations with W2K. Mostly GW 6 SP1 clients, but this phenomenom exists in sp 2, 3 and 4.
It is possible to make it so that nothing is selected when you open the address book, rather than the top item in the list? This might have to be done via registry change or patch. I couldn't find a setting.
When one opens the address book from the GroupWise toolbar, the top item of the opened book is automatically selected. Then, if a user were to press the "Mail" button at the bottom of the address book without doing anything else, the auto-selected item goes into the To: field of the newly created message. GroupWise then relies on the user to notice that the unintended item is there in the To: field, and the user needs to manually delete the unintended item.
I understand that the users could be educated, however, the top item in an address book of a mid to large sized system would never or would nearly never be the intended choice. Better to have the address book not select anything, and the user click once or twice on the intended entry. Since the top item would very, very rarely be used in normal situations, the benefit is negligible. You'd save one mouse click per year unless you communicate with Aabba Aaberphitz a lot, or used special characters to artificially alphabetize the list. However, the harm done by a distracted/vacuous/rushed user can be very high, especially in an environment that has a lot of sensitive information, like a medical institution.
My previous posts elsewhere didn't get much response, and I've done quite a bit of searching. Any insight would be welcome. We've already created null entries named to stay at the top, but to shut it off completely would be very desirable.
Thanks,
John
