Every time I either download an image/pdf/files from a vendor or from other source, the application "Preview" opens the file (I'm in 10.4.4 OSx Tiger) Is there a way to stop this from happening..? It's a nuisance to have to wait til the file opens before anything else can be accomplished. I've looked at the preferences but I lost as to where I can turn this feature off. Any ideas out there??

If you're using Safari and you don't want the files to automaically open, go to Safari preferences/general and uncheck "open safe files". Now downloaded items will not open in any application. It's agood idea to select a folder for you downloads to go so you always know where they are.

To change the default app for opening a particular type of file, right click or Control click click on a file with the appropriate extension - like jpg, pdf, etc.
Choose Get info from the pop up menu. In the Get info window select Open With and pick whatever application you want. Just below that hit Change All so that all files of that type open in your chosen app. If you don't see change all, click the little triangle next to Open with and you'll then see it.
