I have a setup.exe file on the server that I don't want people to be able to execute on the server. I only want users to be able to download this to their local machines. It seems that netscape knows how to do this, but of course, IE gives an option to run on the server. Is there a way to force the file to be "download only"?

cdeardor,

It sounds like you're using Windows on the box that hosts your Apache server. Apache runs as a user, and you could just deny that user's right to execute files in any given folder.

If you are providing an executable for download, you say rightly that a browser usually gives you the option of "Running or Saving to client disk".

These are in effect the same thing. If the user saves the file to disk, and then runs it, then it will run on the client machine.

If they click "run", then the file will be automatically saved to the client's machine, and then executed - same as above, but in one step rather than two.

At no point would the file be run on the server - and IE does not give an option to "run the file on the server".

Thanks for the replies. Sedj, that's what I was thinking, sorry about my "wording", but that's the answer I was looking for. Thanks for the quick response!
