On Friday my test laptop (user hasn't picked it up yet) had some updates to install thru Windows Update. Since the updates when ever I tr and login to the laptop I get a stop error. Initially it was a stop 1D erre but since I swithed the wireless adapter off I'm getting a stop 50 error.

Does anyone know of any quikc way to resolve this so I don't have to re-install XP and all the users applications.

It's a Dell Lattitude D620 with 1GB RAM onboard graphics.

I've searched thru google and MS support but most of the stop 1d errors are after SP2 was installed but XP came with XP already installed. We have three D620 and I'm hoping that this isn't the start of something serious.

Thanks for any help

Robert

Both the 0x1d and 0x50 errors indicate a faulty driver on one of the HARDWARE installed... Possibly a bad GFX Driver or not signed...

update the drivers, if you can through SafeMode, and make sure that they are WHQL certified...

Thanks for the reply.

I can't boot into windows. Safe mode is all I can get to. I've removed the network card and wireless adapter from the device manager and got a different stop code. I removed the display adapters from device manager and now have
*** Stop 0x000000BE (0x7321132, 0x06f49121, 0xf79e9414, 0x0000000B)

*** NTFS.sys - address F7321132 base at F72ED000, datestamp 41107eea.

Everthing I do bring another stop code. Getting ready to reinstall the OS just hope all the Dell utilities get reinstalled as well.

Have you tried a system restore to before the Windows updates? You'll have to reinstall the Windows updates but its a lot easier than reinstalling the OS.

If you do do a system restore and then Windows updates don't update any drivers/firmware listed on the updates site. Instead go to the manufacturers' web sites and check for firmware/driver updates there.

Cheers.

0x000000BE: ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY

A driver attempted to write to read-only memory. Commonly occurs after installing a faulty device driver, system service, or firmware. If a driver file is named in the error message, try to correct the problem by disabling, removing, or rolling back the driver.

* How to Use Driver Verifier to Troubleshoot Windows Drivers {KB 244617} Win 2000, Win XP, Server 2003

Uninstalling, ergo removing the driver from or through the Device Manager does not remove it from the OS or HD (it just gets reinstalled upon boot up)...

use a program such as DriverCleanerPro (free):

You also have the driver rollback feature, that way you would not lose the good updates only the bad driver updates. The moral of this story is do not let Windows update your third party drivers, it is a recipe for disaster.

How To Use the Roll Back Driver Feature in Windows XP

HOW TO: Use the Driver Roll Back Feature to Restore a Previous Version of a Device Driver in Windows XP

A device does not work after you try to update the driver by using Windows Update

You can use Safe Mode for System Restore or the driver rollback.

Did you try the Safe Mode option of "last known good configuration"?

First thing I did was to do a system restore to the previous day but that didn't help.

I rolled back the only device driver it would let me and that caused a stop 50 error.

Afaik there was no driver update only the MS 2nd tuesday updates carried out.

I carried out a system restore to last Tuesday but I got a Stop 1D when I logged back in. When I restarted the laptop I'm getting a Stop 50.

I started verifyer while in safe mode (cos I can't get in any other way) on restart I get the Windoes XP startup screen and the three bars moving left to right and it's now hung there for about 5 minutes.

There has to be an easy way to get round these problems.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

Robert

Easy??? Reinstall.... LOL... sorry...

but my experience has shown me that usually the easiest way to do things is to start from scratch...

but I would follow what Linney has posted and/or reinstall a WHQL or WDM driver for the GFX Card, aswell as the NIC/MODEM drivers... and if all else fails, then do a complete FRESH INSTALL (had a similar issue 2 weeks ago with my own Home PC and a repair install did not go well)...

Thanks,

I've tried Last known config no change, driver roll back no change.

I'm just making sure I can load all the Dell utilities for the function keys etc before I scrub it abd start again.

Thanks for your help

Robert

If the laptop has additional software on it, or user data, I would try an in place repair first before a format and install.
