Stop/Disable Services

I'm having stopping ,starting and disabling services.
When I try the PC just sits there with the egg timer showing. I've left it for hours and it doesn't do anything.
Having trouble as a result of this

No updates via Microsoft will work.

What about trying a repair reinstall?

Didn't really understand your previous post, but I got the feeling that lots of tinkering has gone on - which repair reinstall is often good at ironing out. Have you now got working drivers for all your hardware (in case you need to reapply them)?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm in the position of not having an OS disc and more importantly the disc for the Avid (although it is a legit system with dingle).
