A couple of days ago I updated my AVG to 8.5, I really dont know if that did it or not but I got a bunch of viruses.I went to close down my pc last week and was hearing video playing even though everything was closed, I rebooted and came to a screen that said in big red letters"Warning your computer is infected.." Somehow it was an antivirus scam that was downloaded to my pc?? Anyway I got past that with, spybot, stopzilla, ccleaner. Then I lost access to EXE files, c:/windows/system32/rundll.exe file was missing, I popped it back in and now I can open my programs. The pc only starts up in safe mode and when I try to boot normal I get a blue screen saying the computer found a problem, driver irql is not less then or equal to, and the stop code is Stop: 0x00000001. I dont know much about pc at all, so any help will be great. I do not have any XP Cd's at all.Thanks.

Hi,
What is the rest of the message after the stop code - there should be some more parameters and maybe even a specific device mentioned..

Error Message:

APC_INDEX_MISMATCH

Explanation:

This is a kernel internal error. This error could be caused by a mismatch between KeEnterCriticalRegion and KeLeaveCriticalRegion in a file system.

best course of action, in my opinion, is to go ahead and reformat and do a clean install...

The stop code is actually 0x0000000d1 (0xE2908000, 0x00000002,0x00000000,0xAA6E0AE8)
Thanks.

thattekguy,
Your stop error message of 0x000000D1 is very similar to 0x0000000A IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL stop errors. Chances are it is a device driver that is corrupted. So if you really want to spend the time troubleshooting it, this list of things to try would be a good place to start:

However as Ben suggested, your best course of action to save time would be to reload windows from scratch also known as a clean install. Backup your data first to another drive (such as a flash drive) which might require you to slave the drive in another system. If you are not tech savvy, then you should strongly consider getting 3rd-party help at this point.

What a typo will get you, wrong information...

big differences between a STOP 0X000000D1 and 0x00000001 ...

but still, in this case, as you yourself mention that you are not that savvy in computerese, would be to back up data and start out with a fresh install... and as CDOGG astutely mentioned, back up your data first, e.g. through the help of a BartPE and or a Live LinuxCD...

Will it boot into Normal Mode if you remove all the easily disconnected hardware that is plugged in?

While in Safe Mode you can see if these find any further malware but you seem to have gone down that path already.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

SuperAntispyware

Also have a look at this from Safe Mode.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

310560 - How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP

If you can get into Normal Mode with your user, or another you create in Safe Mode, you can try this.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

And if you don't want to clean install you can try this.

Try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

After that lot it might be time to Format and chalk it up to experience. Also don't surf as an Administrator, if that is how all this trouble started? A limited User cannot do as much damage if he gets infected.
