I'll try to keep this simple.

Backstory:
Had an IDE drive crash(D), also had issue with second ide(C) which is the primary xp install on this machine. Ordered a new sata wb 1tb(F) black to replace it. Plan on using existing sata 160 (listed in title) as a new boot drive and the 1tb for everything else. Eliminating the old ide drive before it crashes as well. Formatted the 1 tb installed windows without issue and copied both ide drives over so the 160sata could be formatted.

Issue:
Formatted the 160 ntfs and attempted to install windows. Gives me a hal.dll missing error. I have used the Recovery Console on the Windows install CD to run `fixmbr`, `fixboot` and `bootcfg /rebuild`. Tried re-formatting during install, before install. Still get same error. Tried removing original ide drive, and booting, then get the error stating that it's not a good boot disk(forgive me as I can't remember the exact error verbiage, up too late). Then have to crtl alt del to reboot. Am not needing to load any sata drivers when installing to 1tb.

other:
have no floppy currently.
have not slipstreamed a sp3 disk yet and tried again.

Summary:
mobo: p5n-e sli
old primary drive 40mb ide
newer sata 160 gig to be used as boot drive
new 1tb to be used as main file storage.
160 gig sata refuses to accept xp sp2 install and gives hal.dll error if old boot drive is in, and gives error of unable to boot if old drive is out and fresh install from sp2 cd runs.

Hopefully this has given the experts here enough information to lend me a hand. It would be most appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
James

See if you can change the settings of the SATA to IDE (or Compatible)...

Download DBAN ( ) for CD and DVD media, create the CD, then boot the PC with only the 160GB SATA drive attached and clear the drive using DBAN...

then reinstall XP...

post back with the results...

Thanks, I'll get that first error message and write it down this time and give Darik's a shot. I'll be there in about 2 hours. Appreciate the assist.

The error message was from the cd boot prompt. had the xp oem cd still in and It did the "press any key to load from cd" then after waiting for a few dots to appear on the same line with no spaces"........error loading operating system."

Just wanted to get that out there before I (hopefully) never see that error again.

Running Dariks wipe of the disk now, probably going to be 4 hours before the wipe is complete. Figured I might as well dod short wipe it since I was here. Nice utility, thanks for pointing it out. Hopefully it won't give me any problems with the 160 size.

Thanks again. Will post back when I've tried to install.

If for some reason It doesn't want to recognize the sata 160 drive, or only wants to format to 32 mb. What would be the best utility to reformat to ntfs. Frankly can't recall if sp2 has that problem or not with xp pro 2002.

Worked like a charm. Added that one to my bag of tricks. Must be nice to make it look that easy. Thanks for the help.

Eternally grateful,
James

Glad that it worked...

sometimes the install will behave abnormal, when it detects something on the drive...

PS: if you ever run into this situation again, you only need to wipe the first part of the drive (first few tracks should do)...
