sting fields doubling to memo fields?

Hi all, I have a little problem with memo fields. My data in crystal is being seen as a memo field, which it shouldnt be as they are actually less thatn 255 characters. I have had the problem before as it is windows 2000 and I had to change unicode settings or something to stop the strings being doubled in length. But of course I cant remember how I did this, has anyone experienced th same problem/.
