I have Windows xp home and need help with IDE connection. I have tried to burn CD's on the fly and the computer tells me that I can't because both are on the same cable. There is one IDE cable that is connected to the CD ROM (master) and the CD/RW (slave) and is plugged into the IDE2 (secondary). And a second IDE cable connected from the hard drive to IDE1 (primary). If anyone knows how to connect the cables the right way it would be a great help to me. Thank you!!!

Try putting your Hard Drive(master) and CD-ROM(slave) on IDE1 and your CD-RW on IDE2 by itself.

I hope your cables will reach....

a cd-r and a cd-r/w will not work on the same ribbon cable, suggest you put the cd-r on the hard drive cable and set to slave
