After trying to boot from the cdrom drive on my sparcstation, i got an error that said "bad magic number in disk label, can't open disk label package". I am not sure if this means that the cd i burned is bad. I downloading Solaris from Sun.com and then burned it onto a cd after expanding it with winzip. I checked the file on my pc, and the disk reads. On my sparc i get errors(already listed). Do i need to reburn my cd or redownload? Also, what jumper settings should I have on my scsi cdrom drive. I have a scsi hard drive, a floppy, and scsi cdrom. I have the jumpers set to "prty" and "term" right now. Thanks for any help!!!

Downloading software & patches for UNIX using a Windows machine (especially if you unzip on this machine ) is one of the best ways to corrupt files. Some sites I get patches from for UNIX apps say DO NOT USE WINDOWS MACHINES TO DOWNLOAD THESE PATCHES.
I always use one of our Solaris Systems to download software & patches and don't have any drama.

a cd burned on a PC?

ouch, i wouldn't touch that with a 30 ft bargepole

ever heard of the joliet file format? i.e. a windows only file format ... all long filenames, and all unix style hidden files are written in a non-standard format ...

only PC's with win95 and above will be able to read them ...

(had this argument with a group of PC users when they said they wanted the department scsi cdrom on their machines, they lost ... :)

I may have to experiment and download UNIX patches or other files on my home Windoze machine, burn to CD using ISO9660 format (i.e. create an ISO file first then burn that to CD-R). In theory this "should" work fine and be readable on a UNIX system.

Unless, there is something incompatible with the act of downloading and storing the data using a Win machine (which does not seem likely). Binary is binary right (as long as you download it using binary mode of course - i.e. FTP)?

Part of the problem is Windows machines like to try and unzip any zipped files as they download them. The trouble is they usually manage to corrupt the files in the process.

Thanks for all of the help guys!!! I found out exactly what my problem is! I had to change the file type of the solaris 8 binary file to <file-name>.iso, then burned it to a cd using "create cd image". Voila! It started to boot from the cd!!My only problem now is that i need to get 32mb ram for my sparc and I'm all set!! THanks again everybody!!!

strange, I've never seen a Windows machine unzip a file during download (unless it has somehow been configured to do so but I've never seen that). Bizzare download behavior in Windows is usually a result of file extention associations being set up incorrectly.

Glad ya got it working though :)

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The file was not unzipped during the download, I unzipped it using Winzip 8.0 on my PC. After i unzipped it, i renamed the file with .iso at the end. Then i burned the file to cd using "create cd from cd image", which i guess writes everything in standard binary. So, i'm all set! Thanks for the help!!
