Add stickiness to your web site!", the ad blared.

What exactly is "stickiness"?

I have read definitions of this computing term, and I am still scratching my head.

To open the floor, here are some definitions:

sticky content - World-Wide Web pages that refer only or mostly to pages on the same web site. This is important to some commercial sites who want users to keep accessing pages from their site because they receive advertising income from each hit. It does however somewhat miss the point of the World-Wide Web which is to link useful information across the whole Internet.

sticky connection - A connection between a client and server that is maintained for some period of time. On the Web, streaming audio or video and e-commerce transactions are examples.

sticky analysis - A kind of program analysis that uses information from all the call sites of a function or procedure.

Perhaps a 'local' example may help. There have been suggestions for 'sticky threads' meaning they sticks to, or are always at the top of the thread list.

Note: Please, there is no point in discussing the feature, it is only presented as an example of 'stickiness'.

Good Luck

In this case "stickiness" refers to the ability to keep browsers (the people, not the software) on your web site for as long as possible, for the reasons mentioned above.

If you are sending people to another site (a definition of "stickiness"), surely you can't be simultaneously keeping them on your site?

I am not sure I posted in the correct forum, as my approach to this phrase is a bit philosophical in nature.

Let me explain.

If adding a link to another web site adds "stickiness to your web site, I am left with the impression that instead of keeping the user on your page, you are sending them to someone elses. Kind of the opposite of "stickiness".

If you code the link to the other site properly, it will open a new window, while keeping the one containing your site open.

Too, if people can get to that site thru yours, and they like the site, they may continue to use your site to get to it.

Sounds silly, I know. But that the "ad biz" for you.

This reminds me of one of my favorite six-year-old jokes (i.e., a joke told by a six-year-old child):

What's brown and sticky?

I used to rock and roll every night and party every day. Then it was every other day. Now I'm lucky if I can find 30 minutes a week in which to get funky. - Homer Simpson

I hear you, Tracy. Everytime I am asked to add someone's ad to my site, I feel like the whole story is not being told.

For a kid joke, that one's pretty good. I'm going to have to see whether I can get some "cool dad" points by springing that one on my six-year-old.

I think the advertiser is making the point that it's not just eyeballs (hits), but making them stick (length of view) that matter, and that they can improve the latter.

For additional "cool dad" points perhaps

Why did the skeleton belch?

cigless ...

Speaking of belching, my granddaughter came up with a clever comment. She and my daughter were laughing about something and she burped while she was laughing. She looked at my daughter and said: "Huh! Laughing gas." Not bad for a 7-year-old.

Here's another "cool-dad" thing. You know those white packing peanuts. Tell your child they're "ghost poop".

I understand SantaMufasa, and they're great jokes, but sometimes it's better for those to be in a new thread rather than tangential to the thread subject.
