Hi All,
I am due to install Windows 2K onto an IBM X series machine, then install SQL Server 2K to be used as a development box.

However, this is my first SQL 2K Server build and I want to make sure that my Windows 2K Server setup is as solid as possible before installing SQL onto it.

Are there any special patches or updates I should be aware of? I was just going to install SP3 for Windows 2K and SQL SP3, I don't really want to use Windows Update, as it once installed something that sent my laptop t!ts up.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Win 2000 Server, SP3 should be fine. There have been some security updates since Win 2K SP3. I've not encountered any problems installing the patches via Windows Update.

If you want to get the best answer for your question read faq183-874 and faq183-3179.

Just did this not only 45 minutes ago.

Start the SQL2k install
Pick your installation type. (client tools, client/server tools...)
Pick your instance (noramly leave this as default)
Pick your collation
Pick the account to run SQL Server and SQL Server Agent under. (most often a domain user with local admin privilages to the box you are installing on.
Pick the protocals. (normally defaults are fine)
Pick where you want it to install to.

the service pack only has like 2 check boxes after you tell it what account to perform the upgrade with.

It's a no brainer for standard installations.
