i have recently had my computer crash and know i need to install windows 98. i have the cd and startup disk, which has cd support ( my friend made it on win98 control panel)
so what do i do.
iof you cant explain step by step then can you tell me of a website that can.
Also i read in another thread that you have to install drivers. what are the main drivers that need to be installed?
do i have to install the drivers for my motherboard as it has built in sound and graphics card? ( ATX motherboard)

First, boot to the startup disk by selecting "Start with CD-ROM support" when asked.
Second, change to the windows folder on the HD, and rename the win.com file, by doing the following from the A:\ prompt:
c: <enter>
cd windows <enter>
ren win.com win.old <enter>
Now change to the drive letter of your CD-ROM.
If it used to be D: it will now be E: temporarily, because of the way the startup disk works, not to worry, it will be D: again later. If it used to be E: it will now be F: ...
From the c:\ prompt type:
cd E: <enter>
setup <enter>
Near the end of the setup, you will be prompted for any drivers that are not included in the Windows setup, and it will notify you if you need the modem disk, or the sound card disk, etc...
Give it a shot, and post back with any problems you have.

If it comes back to you like that, instead of using the floppy disks or CDs, you can try specifying c:\windows\system which should already have the files from the last install.

boot to DOS with the startup disk with cd-rom support

do these steps:

A:\format c: /s
after format is complete:

c:c:\md win98
(cd-rom letter)d:d:\cd win98
d:\win98 copy *.* c:\win98

c:c:\cd win98
c:\win98\setup

and your off and loading windows from the harddrive...
