Being, as my name says, a former Bell tech, I'm accustomed to using the telco's long favorite meter for run-of-the-mill station troubles: the Tempo Sidekick. It measures opens, shorts & grounds, stress (for smoking out intermittent opens), VOM functions and--very important--sees stations. But they're also over a grand for a new one should mine ever go south (unless I wait for a shop to repair it). Does anyone have another meter to recommend with which will do equivilent things and costs less? Eveything's got a limited life, and this one's still strong; but one day it's going to go down for the last time.

There are 5 Tempo Sidekick at Ebay right now for around $200, but hopefully someone will know of another option in test equipment.

get your friends back at the telco to turn it in when it breaks, not that i would ever do that
