Static Variables

I have a report I've created that has a command for one of the tables. This command is not joined to any other table and holds 2 fields:

CurBusDay
BusDayinMnth

I want to use these fields throughout my report, but I was told to create a static variable in the header and use that in the formulas rather than the field directly. I don't use variables much, so I want to make sure I'm doing this correctly. Any help would be appreciated.
