Static routes & Accss to LAN while on VPN connection

In Windows 2000, I use static routes on my machine of the format route add Destination MASK 255.255.255.255 Gateway METRIC 1 -p. This allows me to access LAN servers, printers etc while on a VPN connection(we use nortel extranet client) This format does not work however with NT 4.0. Does anybosy know why?
