Im trying to access a cisco 1605 router from my net. The router is on a 10.10.0.0 with a ip address of 10.10.20.254 gateway 10.10.20.1. My net is 10.40.0.0 the problem im having is i can't ping the router(10.10.20.254)but i can ping the gateway(10.10.20.1). The only way I resolve this is my placing a static route on the 1605 point to our net but do you really need this? Could someone explain, thanks.

Hi,

Well, unless you are using rip or whatever, the router is only going to 'know' about directly connected subnets, i.e. those physically plugged into the router. If 10.40.0.0 is only connected through a multi-homed PC acting as gateway then you have to explicitly tell it that the 10.40.0.0 subnet can be reached via 10.10.20.1 . (or that 10.10.20.1 is a default gateway) Otherwise, how would it know where to send 10.40.0.0 packets ?

Regards

Thanks for the info ifincham but Why I can't ping the router ip(10.40.20.254) but I ping the routers gatway(10.10.20.1)
