Hello,

I have a Linksys router (Home model) and I want to know the best procedure for accomplishing what I need. I need to have a PC on my network with a different IP range than the default 192.168.0.x access the internet. Is the best way a static route? How do I handle this?

Thanks,
Wes

Wes,

Just in all my years of networking to connect different networks to different networks you use routers.

The "other" PC with a different IP range will need a gateway in the same IP range as it. I would say you have 2 choices.

1) If you have the right model of Linksys router you can download a "new" firmware that does VLANs from the Linksys community - Linksys does not write this firmware - it is opensource - I know I have seen it talked about at the networking forum and the linksys forum at Then you can have each port on the router a different range of IPs if you want based on VLANs.

2) You could get a 2nd router - attach its WAN port to the LAN port on the 1st router - you can set IP in range or let it get address from 1st Linksys. Then on the 2nd routers LAN ports you can use the IP range you need.

Someone else might have a suggestion on the static route - I do not see how it would work but I am always ready to learn!!!

Hope this helps!

Wow, thanks for the great advice. I thought of the second way, but was kind of curious if you could even do it with a static route without a second router. I may see if I can find the linksys software!

Thanks again!
Wes
