Static on VOIP trunks

I have a BCM400 networked with six BCM50's. We are using VOIP trunks. The phones are T7316E's and T7316's. I ahve noticed a 1/2 second of static or a "hiss" intermittantly when calling over a VOIP trunk.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you using VAD? What is the WAN topology (point to point T-1's, VPN, etc). Is QOS enabled across your LAN/WAN?
