Hey,

I'm thinking of changing ADSL providers. At the moment I have a static IP address, while the new provider has a non-static IP address.

What are the benefits / downfalls?

My only concerns are I have a wired network connecting two other PCs together and need to to share my broadband internet access with them. And in the next few weeks I'm looking at installing a wireless network at home.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!
Antonio

The only compelling advantage in your instance for a static IP would be if you were offering a server-based service on the internet.

With the often free dynDNS services available, even that is more a convenience than a necessity, unless you intend to host your own mail services.

Hey...

No, not intending to host anything - I just need to carry on internet connection sharing with my other 2 PCs and to do it wirelessly in the next few weeks.

You won't see any differences except in router configuration.

Cool, thank you...

The router configuration - does that mean I have to give my other PCs in the network a different IP address each time I want them to share the internet connection with the main PC if the main PC uses a non-static IP address for the internet?

No. Your router will keep the same address range unless you change it. This of course is assuming that the router is the source of the IP address on the local network. The only thing you are doing is changing what the other side of the router is talking to.

VPN tunneling is usually more reliable with static IP address: otherwise there is little advantage for a domestic installation.
