Hi Guys,

Have you seen the 'this could be your Ad...' banner ad on the top of this page?????.... it has a static or snow effect on it, any ideas how to create something like this that does not create a huge file, I tried once and failed...

I've done something like that before (might try and dig it out actually) and, yeah, the file size can be a problem whenever you try to build an image with that many different lines and dots, especially if you draw it as vectors in Flash.

I got the file down to about 10k by creating a basic snow pattern in Photoshop and exporting it as a .gif - take the image right down to 2 colours to cut out as many bits as possible and make it exactly the right size for your final exported movie so that you're adding no additional overhead.

When you import the .gif turn it into a symbol and then reuse that symbol for the different patterns. I made a four frame clip with the symbol in its normal position for frame 1, flipped vertically for 2, flipped horizontally for 3 and flipped both horizontally and vertically for 4. It gave a sufficiently random effect without having to use multiple images and therefore bump up the file size.

Guaranteed to give you spots before the eyes :)

Excellent!!!! - you are a ledge...
