I am new to Linux and have just installed RH 7.3 as a Server. Yesterday when I installed the machine was running fine. Today when I arrived it was locked up to a black screen. After a couple of reboots I got to the command prompt, which is where I boot to. When I run startx, the machine locks up at the black screen. When I check the Xconfigurator, there is no xserver listed, is this normal? It also hangs if I try to test the settings. I have a ATI Rage 128 vid card, and it worked fine yesterday. Now this machine is not a very good one, so it may be that. To a Linux guru, does this sound like a Linux prob or is it my machine as I think...

try X 2>/tmp/x.out, which will redirect X's error messages to a file. Read the file for a clue on the issue. I've had it choke on Xconfigurator and still work when I do a startx, so I'm not sure about that. Also, when you run X, if you get the crosshatch screen, the problem may be with the windomanager. Try the test command I gave you with 'X' and startx and see what happens

Thanks, Jaymz! Cool tip about the error messages. That, I'm sure, will come in real handy. I was actually right about the machine being the problem. I replaced the MOBO and processor and haven't had trouble since. (knock on wood)[hammer] Matt Wray
