Starting Upgrade from Dynamics 6.0 to Great Plains 7.5

According to the upgrade instructions the first upgrade should be the first client and server. Yet the upgrade instructions say to insert the CD into the server machine. If I do this, how does it know about the first client? Should the CD go into the first client? They don't have to be the same machine do they? Currently the server only holds the database there are not GP components (application) on the server. I believe I should run the client / server upgrade for the first client, not the server is this correct?
