starting proftp 1

How do i start the proftpd-server? Are there any commands or do i have to edit config-files?
And: How can i see if my proftp-server is running and up?

ps -ef | grep proftp

That'll show you if it's running.

To start it, do
"which proftp"
to look for it, or
locate proftp | grep bin
or
ls /etc/init.d/ | grep proftp
