When starting XP, the menu, tool bar at the bottom does not come up, only the hour glass. Looking at the event manager, there are two errors that may be causing the problem, but Microsoft has no help on them.
/LM/SMTPSVC/ Can not be open.
/LM/W3SCV/ Can not be open.
Any help would be appreciated.

What happens in Safe Mode or if you logon on as another user?

Include the Event ID and Source name of any Event Viewer errors.

Does not work in Safe Mode, or with another user login.
Event Errors are as follows:
Under Application:
ID 15 Source: AutoEnrollent
ID 1054 Source: Userenv
Under System:
ID 7001 Source: Service Control Manager - also ID 7022, and ID 7023

ID 29 Source: W32Time also warning - ID 14

ID 5719 NETLOGON

ID 116 SMTPSYC

ID 116 W2SVC

I think that some of the above are because I am not logged into the company network, but at home.

Thank you very much for your help.

Thom

AutoEnrollent and NETLOGON would appear to be as you say because you are logged on locally. Probably some of the others too.

You can check out Event ID's here.

But why your Taskbar fails to display or the machine hangs is harder to understand. You are logging on to the machine as a local user and not the Domain?
