I have installed on my computer Red Hat 7.1. I first logon with the text mode because during the installation I couldn't configure my monitor. Laer on I was helped configured my monitor and now I log on in the graphical mode with GNOME... So I wold like to know. How do I return to my text mode. With the shell mode

Hi,

To permanently change it back to default to console mode , you just edit your /etc/inittab and change the line that says :

id:5:initdefault:

to

id:3:initdefault:

After that you'd have to enter 'startx' to go into X.

As a one-off, you should also be able to open a gnome-terminal window, 'su' to root and type 'init 3'. That should kill X and GDM and bring you back down to console level.

Regards

Adding to Ifincham's suggestions above, you could also try pressing the <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <F1> keys simultaneously when in X and this will bring you to one of the text consoles... when you wish to return to X, switch by <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <F7>... AV
