tried to load Microsoft greeting program-a mess
It "updated MDAC" and the computer is not the same. Have Uninstalled program and IE 5.5. (this is win98) i have also
reinstalled drivers, and software.
1. What is MDAC?
2. on starting or restarting the computer goes to the dos screen and asks which mode I want to start in. i click 1, then enter. How does one fix this?
Thank you for all your help.

Edit the file called MSDOS.SYS in the root c:\ folder.
You can open it using notepad.
Look for the line near the bottom that says "BootMenu=0" and it will probably say "BootMenu=1", change the 1 to a 0 save it as "MSDOS.SYS" including the quotes!

WOW that worked! What did I do, and why did I have to do it?
Would it be worth my while to try this program again, or just say that it is not compatible with my computer?
Thanks

You could try it again, now that you know the fix if it screws up on you.
I think the program may want to run in MSDOS mode, or possibly in "Compatibility mode", and so it's supposed to temporarily change that setting, but it's supposed to change it back upon restart. Obviously this failed, and it's quite possible it's your virus scanner that caused the fail. Turn off the virus scanner completely, install the program, then restart. It may work.
If it causes the same problem again, I'd trash the program.
