Hi,

Every time when I start Internet Explorer 6 or click a hyperlink that opens a new browser window, the system also starts the Windows installer program to install a program (that I already have installed) from the Windows\temp directory.

I removed all related files from my temp directory and also removed the registry key that pointed to the installation files. The result is that the Windows installer starts and closes right away, although it should not start at all. I have searched the registry to find a clue what is causing this but I can't find it.

I have no idea what caused this issue to occure, it's probably because I installed/removed a program (but other then the one that it tries to install), but I have no idea which one. Does anyone have a clue to what this causes and how I can stop Windows installer to start when I use internet explorer?

b.t.w. I use ie6 and win2000 pro with all service packs installed.

thanks
JeePee

Windows Explorer actually not starts only when ie6 is started, but also when using other programs, such as
- When windows is starting up
- Outlook 2000 (click on any link)
- Access (double click on a record to open it)
- Goldmine (click on a link in the email centre)
I also tried the automatic, manual and disable setting for the windows installer entry in \admin tools\computer management\services and applications\services without solving the issue. In fact, if I stop the service, it is started automatically as soon as I e.g. open ie6.

Just for the sake of anyone getting the same issue...

I removed windows installer following instructions given in
After that, I got the same message. This is weird since it was installed and the windows installer files were completely removed. Therefore I cleaned the registry using regclean and regvac, still the same. Then I search the registry and removed all remaining entries containing the file names that I removed, exept for uninstall strings. Still the same issue. Then I installerd windows installer 2.0.

Well, now my system was messed up. Don't know if it was caused by removing invalid entries from the registry or by installing windows installer 2.0. Anyway, I couldn't start any program that was installed using windows installer (McAfee, MS Office...) I could re-install McAfee, but office was a real problem, couldn't re-install, couldn't de-install :-( So, I had to make a backup of my data and completely re-install everything. Not bad anyway, everything runs better again. Tip, if you do a clean installation, make an image after you have installed windows and office, installing these and updating them with the latest service releases and security packs cost you a day or so...

JeePee,

Delete the c:\windows\wininit.ini file, and check these registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Look over the entries in the right pane window. If you don't know what an entry is, post back.
