starting from the beginning

i had a pleasant(!) introduction to a cisco 3500XL switch last week and even tho i somehow managed to get it working i suspect that my config is not too great :)
even tho i set up a vlan or two i still don't really understand what they are (i have a pretty good idea tho). i also don't fully understand why traffic goes thru my gbic module when it doesn't seem to be part of a vlan (this is what i want tho).
these are examples of some of the basics that i'm missing, so i'm looking for any links where i can read up on some of this and failing that any books i should take a look at.
