Hi, this is a 2.2.10 kernel, I know too old, but has been working great for many years now. It has 3 SCSI disks.
Here is what I get now(it was working fine before, there may have been a power failure ):
....
SEAGATE Disk 2 Start Unit request failed
...
sda ok
sdb ok
sdc Spinning up disk ........................
detected 3SCSI disks total

....
fsck.ext2 Device not configured while trying to open /dev/sdc1

Possibly non-existent or swap device?

Does this mean the disk is beyond repair??

Thanks, svar

It certainly doesn't sound too good. If your SCSI host adapter has on-board diagnostics in it BIOS it may pay to see if that can detect the device and access it but on the surface it sounds like the drive has died, assuming of course that you have doen the obvious things such as checking the cables & connectors.

Thanks, will try to see. The drive is inside the box and since the other 2 disks are detected, I see nothing obvious. I will open to see if the connection is broken, but
I can imagine no reason for this

N, I suspect it's not but you always check the most obviosu things last so I thought I'd change the order and check them first for a change. It does sound like the disk is toast although there are specialist services that can sometimes repair them and/or strip the data off them if this is required - presumably you have backups though.
