Hi

2 short questions :

1. How can I start a program/daemon when booting my Linux server (Redhat 7.2) ?

2. How can I start a daemon/application when logging into the Linux server (locally, not from a ssh or telnet session) for eg. user x ?

Thanks

Peter,

1) You would configure this in /etc/rc.d/init.d

2) This depends, what do you mean when starting X? If your machine is configured to startup in run level 3 and you login, then start X with startx, you can configure a startup script in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S...

You have to be familiar with the startup routine of Linux. Are you confortable with this?

I'm sorry... with x I was referring to 'any' application
(e.g. application x or application y)

For example : a ftp server (not the one embedded in Redhat) :
if I want this to start up at runtime, I could edit /etc/rc.d/init.d
-> what is the exact syntax to start
e.g. /usr/sbin/daemond -B
when the server boots ?

and no, I'm not confortable yet with the startup sequence... a little push in the right direction might help... (I'm willing to learn it myself, as long as I know where to look) ---------------------------------------------------------------------
