I want to be able to Start an application from Terminal Services without showing the user the full desktop. I have seen this done before but cannot figure out how to do it.

Our users are using Remote Desktop Connection to connect.

Regards,

You do this with group policy. there could be a 100 or more policy changes required to do what you want, at what point do you need help? maybe an application like "2x Application Server" or a cytrix solution would be better suited for you.

Does 2003 offer the Application Security like 2000 does from the Resource Kit? I know I use that on my 2000 TS to allow only one program to launch when a user connects, and when they disconnect the session ends.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Open remote desktop and expand options. Go to the programs tab, put in the program to run and the folder to start it to run (same as a shortcut) and check the check box. Now go to the General tab and save it. You can send this to whomever and they can run it. They will not see the desktop and when they close the app they will be logged off. The only thing is if they know enough they can go in and uncheck the box.

Hope this helps.

If you want the server to be purely used as a remote application server, and not have logons to it that don't invoke the program, keep reading.

To set it on the server instead of the client, open up the Terminal Services Configuration tool. Get properties on the RDP-TCP component. Go to the Environment tab and set the program there to what you want.

Any configuration of that server will now need to be done from the console, since you won't be able to terminal in, even under the Admin account, without triggering the App instead of the Explorer shell.

Typically on systems I've configured this way, I've installed another remote control program like VNC, LogMeIn or PCAnywhere so that I can remote admin the system without using RDP to connect to it.
