I need help with my PC that my friend just built for me.
My question is a farily easy one, but i just dont know how to do it.

Q: My fan is somewhat kinda loud (Rear Case Fan) Everytime i go into Standby my Fan doesnt stop. It keeps on blowing. How do i tell it to stop spinning when my computer is on standby? Or to power down when im not using it

1.2 AMD CPU
(2) Case Fan (Rear/Front)
VIA Apollo KT133 MB
40 HDD
768mb Ram/Memory
Windows XP

Is it in the pref. or BIOS? Please help. What to do?!?!?

It's very unlikely you'll be able to shut it off from the BIOS. However there are other things you can try. For example a baybus allows you to control the spedd of every fan in the case by routing the fan power through it. They can normally support about 5 fans and you can get more info from here:

and you can buy them from loads of places on the web.

However I think this might be a little more than you need. You might think about getting a quieter fan for it. Fans are pretty cheap and you shouldn't have any problems swapping them over.

You could, if you're feeling confident get some stuff from Radioshack (US) or Maplins (UK) to make yourself a little switch that allows you to turn the fan off when on standby. Or maybe get a little resistor to reduce its speed a bit.

I think that replacing the fan with a quieter one is the preferred idea though, because even on standby your PC will generate some heat so it's nice to have a fan running all the time. Most 80mm case fans are pretty slow (<3000 rpm)but still push a reasonable amount of air and are pretty quiet.

Hope some of that was useful! :)

Well i dont know if that is what i need. My old Sony Vaio after going on standby would shut down everything and nothing would be working, hard disk would stop spinning, fan would stop blowing (When i turn the PC back on everything would start working again and everything i was working on would still be there, on the desktop), thats what state i want my new PC to go in. If anyone can help, it would really help me out

Avery

Thanks for the help though Xscape

Desktop PC's STILL arn't designed to save power in this way yet. (not any I know of anyway)

Have you tried looking in the bios settings to see if you can turn the fan off when in standby?

I have this option on my PC, just press the F2 or DEL key when you turn on the PC and check out the options.
