Trying to help out an acquaintance with their PC, but I'm not too familiar with Win2K. There's a number of issues but I'll deal with just this for now....

OS is Win 2K pro SP2
IE is 5.0

Problem is as stated in subject,, Cannot connect to any web content with internet explorer.

Ping 216.109.124.73 Works OK (yahoo.com)
Ping Yahoo.com = "unknown host"
Ipconfig/all shows DNS Servers as it should

At startup windows installer flashes several times and it 'might' be flashing at opening of IE as well though I cannot definitely remember that detail.

Regardless of what you set the default page to be IE opens to what appears to be a internet search page though there is NO identifying text on the page that would tell me whose page it is/was.

Type an url into the address bar and it changes to something like hit.elevon...somethingorother with a bunch of %search and so on. IN any event you wind up at the same old "page cannot be displayed".

I've Dl'ed a new IE6SP1, the winsockfix.exe, the windows installer cleanup utility, and a few other assorted goodies to take with me on my next visit.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Add to your kit:

AdAware
CWShredder
Spybot 1.2
Hijack This!

See faq608-4650

Thanks Bcastner, Ad-Aware and Spybot were among the goodies I had thought of. Hijack and CWShredder were ones I hadn't thought of.

I also have done a little more research now and believe I had seen some evidence of the new.net stuff in there so I'll be bringing some stuff for the removal of that business.

Additionally, I saw a lot of errors in the event viewer from DCOM that I have to educate myself about. Any FAQ/resourses you can suggest???

Thanks, TJ Baker
