I'm looking for a stand-alone (preferably free) virus scanner that is updatable and won't interfere with existing antivirus applications. I typically use Trend Micro's Sysclean, and download the updated pattern file weekly. The problem is it takes so long to run. I've used Stinger ocaisionally, but they don't update it very often, so you may not catch something that's brand new. Any ideas?

All good thinks take time. I use Bert Pe and have ten differ AV programs on it I just ran antiVir, Bitdefinder, Ewito, Giant, Spybot S&D, Adaware SE on the wife's PC all from my Bert Pe disk without having install on the PC. I have found what is the best in AV software today is not tomorrow so it is good to have a verity to pick from with trying to fix a badly infected PC.

OK, but if you boot from Bart PE, it's not scanning your windows registry is it?

I personally prefer using F-prot antivirus and so far I have not had any conflicts with others and yes I use multiple antivirus. I never rely on one alone. Anyways F-prot is who I reccomend. My personal opinion it is the best but keep in mind this is my opinion and not proven fact. Other people think differently :) .

I second that, F-prot is excellent. Pretty light if you want to keep it as background protection as well.

Also, if this is just a home license--they allow 5 computers per home when you buy one legitimate license ($29).

you can use Mwav from E-scan which is based on the Kaspersky engine, you need to re-download it after a month, very thorough scanner!

Here's my spiel on how to use it and set it up!

Note: this is a stand alone, it doesn't install to start/programmes.

Download Mwav, double click on it and it will extract to C:\kaspersky. Click on the kaspersky folder and click on Kavupd, a black dos window will open and it will update the programme for you, be patient it will take 5-10 minutes to download the new definitions. Once it's updated, click on mwavscan to launch the programme.

Use the defaults of:

Memory
startup folders
Registry
system folders
services

Choose drive , all drives and, click scan all files
and then click scan/clean.

Note: this is a very thorough scanner, it might take anything up to an houror more, depending on how many drives you have and how badly infected your pc is.

I'll try them both. Thanks for the tips.
