Stacking?

I am not familiar with how "stacking" works with HP switches. Can someone explain to me the ins and outs of this technology? I have three Procurve 2650's in an MDF closet and each has an IP address assigned to it but also seem to have stacking turned on. From what I have read at least one of the ideas behind "stacking" is to only assign an IP address to a master but not to the others in the stack. Is it possible (and if it is why would you?) have an IP address assigned to each switch but also have stacking set up?

Any links you can provide where I can read up in this technology would also be appreciated![bigcheeks]
