We are planning to re-design a network at a remote office. We have two switches (4000M and 2424M) that reside in two office locations not more than 400 ft apart. We would like to stack the two switches. Is stacking possible between the 4000M and 2424M switch? If yes, what modules do we need to purchase? Thanks.

Is there a router between the two locations / switches? If you have a router in there, then your looking at different subnets, etc.

Typically for "stacking" you just need a network connection between the two switches, so they can see each other. In this case due to distance, you'll likely want fiber as the connection so you would need a mini-GBIC fiber module between the two. I can't remember the distance maximums for short-haul versus long-haul fiber(check on HP's web site) to make sure you get the correct fiber module (SX versus LX).

Thanks hinesjrh. I contacted HP Procurve technical sales a few weeks ago. I needed to purchase the J4113A (LX variety) modules for both switches and several hundred feet of 62.5 um multi-mode fiber cable with SC connectors.
