Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but i'm stuck for what to do next.

Myself and colleagues access a remote sql 2008 database server via a vpn connection through our employer's network. I have been assured by the it department that all connections have been allowed through the firewall for the vpn client (SonicWall). Our problem is that none of our team can access the remote database more than %70 of the time using Visual Studio. Using Management Studio, connection is usually %99 of the time. My question is why is there a difference between programs that connect via the same vpn to the same database?

Are there any settings that need to be altered in visual studio? all default settings have been left as the it dept have said there are no sql server experts to assist. I have used sql server 2005 for approx 5 years but only just started with ssrs after being transferred to another employer, so visual studio is relativly new to me. I can't think of any reason why one program works and the other is so erratic with connection?

Any enlightenment?

when connecting to sql server, there's usually a property for connection timeout, meaning if the connection doesn't connect within X seconds, it stops. This can be different for different applications.

I'm thinking that your vpn is really unstable and you're hitting this timeout.

try doing a continuous ping test to your sql server and check the ping response when the connection fails...
