SSRS 2005 export to PDF slow?

Hi - I created a report that has no graphs or anything but it has a subreport. The subreport is very simple with only one table...Anyway, the report generates fairly quickly but it takes an extremely long time to export to PDF. The report is large. This particular one is 380 pages and it is still trying to export. The reports can be 1000+ pages...anyway, I need to know if anyone has experienced this slowness before and/or if anyone has any ideas on how to get this report in a pdf quicker. Thanks!!!

A PDF of that size is going to take some time to generate. Remember, it is also creating indexes in the file as well as writing the records. How long (time wise) are talking about here?

The 380 report file was about 15 min...I just found out that adobe reader isn't installed on this machine...I am installing it now to see if that would help at all. I am going then to try the 714 page export and note the timing.

I know that it doesn't sound that long for one file, but we have about 3000 files of varying lengths that we will need to generate every month this way. Some are 2 pages and the largest is about 1000 pages. I guess I will time the 714 page one after installing adobe reader and see if it helps at all.

We could always schedule this to run in the evening. But we still would have problems if each one took on average 15 min to generate....Any creative ideas, even with VB programming or something?

what about using the ADOBE toolkit to export directly to PDF rather than going through SSRS? It's been several years since I've used it, but they used to have a good set of API that made exports pretty quick since there was no middle-man.
