We need to get an SSL Certifcate to secure an exchange server for push e-mail. Do i need to get the SSL cert for the common name of the server, e.g. My server is called "server" on the domain "enterprise.local" so in the csr request do i just put for the common name "server" ?

I believe you will want to use your external fQDN. ex. mail.mycompany.com. You can find instructions for something like this on networksolutions web site. They have tutorials.
