When setting up a new web application, there are 3 options under security configuration. Auth provider, Allow anonymous, and Use SSL.
My question is whether these options can be changed later for the same website. I could not find any options from where I could.

Assuming that I could not, I created a web application enabling SSL. I created a site collection on it thereafter.
I went into SSL, checked the non-ssl port and ssl port. When I try to open the site collection on the non-ssl port, it gives an error, obviously because I dont have the SSL cert configured yet.

Next, when I go to the non-ssl port, it prompts be for the authentication, and then redirects me to the ssl port.
Does that I mean that I cannot access the non-ssl port at all?

Please advice.
Thanks a bunch.

There should be an IIS setting that is forcing a redirect to HTTPS.

If you go into IIS Manager on the server
- Expand out Web Sites
- Right click on your virtual directory
- Click Properties
- Click Directory Security
- Under Secure Communications - Click Edit
- Uncheck Require secure channel if it is not checked.

Also look in SharePoint Central Administration - Operations - Alternate Address Mappings. It probably has the http address as an internal address mapped to the https, thus causing it to redirect.
