SSIS FORMULA ERROR?

using visual studio 2008
V3.5 sp1

i HAVE A TARGET FLD DEFINED:
xfld (DT_STR,30,1252)


I HAVE A FORMULA HERE for xfld:

Im comparing 2 year fields IE: 2008 = 2008


(CAST([YEAR] AS VARCHAR(4)) == CAST([CUR_YR] AS VARCHAR(4)) ? [STATUS] : "CLOSED"

if they are = then xfld = STATUS
if <> then xfld = "CLOSED"


THE error i get is that this is invalid statement....

Im not seeing why. ( looking to long at it no doubt)
I did the cast to varchar on the test fields because one was getting converted to DT_14 somehow. Although both are cast to varchar in my source select. Something strange there anyway.

have better eyes than mine?
