Hey,

i have a problem, and hope someone knows the answer or can point me in the right dir. i have 2 hosts:

- both use ssh (openssh) and PAM for remote logins

- both pam.conf's and sshd_config's match

- both ssh, ssl, zlib, and pam versions agree

- both are at AIX 5.3 ML 3

- one allows login with UseLogin off, the other doesn't.

for the host not functioning, i can make a connection with the remote host's sshd daemon, give it the account password, get the last login timestam and motd, but then the connection is closed. if i run ssh in verbose mode from a local host i see it disonnectes with Exit status 254. this box will work with UseLogin set to on.

any ideas?

i've gotten this narrowed down to the .Xauthority file. when logging in via ssh there is a timeout associated with updating the file in a user's home dir. the timeout can be broken with a ctrl-c. there are no disk quotas on this system, plenty of disk space, and the users have proper perms for their home dirs and .Xauthority files.

we're using X forwarding within ssh, and i've noticed that a hung login is locking the file while the timeout is occuring. however for some reason an ssh login cannot update the file. i am able to use xauth to examine its contents once at command prompt....

any ideas?

IBM has released a fix for this problem. apply ML 4 for 5.3 or IY76807.

Thanks me! :)
