Hail, O helpful ones!

I was trying to work from home today and couldn't ssh into the server from home. I can do it from work with no trouble.

I am using PuTTY, and allit does is "hang" where you should either get a login promt or a tomeout error. It jsut show a blank, black window. I get nothing. I can ssh into other servers, but not the one I needed to get into.

It's no rush for answer now, because I already drove to the office and got what I needed to get off the server.

Thanks for the info...:) Hope I was of some help...

Try to telnet to your server to port 22. Do you get any answer? If yes, it is probably not network problem, but putty's or OS'es misconfiguration; look at /var/log/messages or secure for hints. If not, investigate further. Can you telnet to other services on your server (80, 53 etc, anything that is running)? If yes, your sshd is probably down or firewalled. Can you ping or traceroute your server? Can you telnet to your server from different location?

This kind of problems is better solved online ;-)

I can ping it. I never get answer back by telnet to :22,80,53,110,25....If I telnet to 23 I get "Connection refused".

If I remember correctly, I have secureshelled into it before. I didn't change anything, I know that. I don't go in there unless I have to. It's a live server.

I sure would like to know what in the world is going on with this thing...

Whene I was there today, I noticed that in the sshd_config file the ... err...something like "remote login yes" was commented out. Should that be like that? Hope I was of some help...

Sounds more like a routing issue to me, the return packets are probably routed via a different path, so PuTTY never gets it.
Look at your default gateway setup and static routes and compare with the other servers you can access. IBM Certified Confused - MQSeries
IBM Certified Flabbergasted - AIX 5 pSeries System Administration

You can also start tcpdump on both sides and look what's going in and out, but it is an advanced alchemy ;-) If you know tcp/ip, try it. tcpdump -n host yourhost and port 22
