Howdy!

I am having heck of a hard time trying to get my WIN XP station to connect to my SuSE 9.1 linux server.

I do my web development using MM Dreamweaver. I need to load files onto my linux server. MM-DW uses piggy-back onto Putty to open the ssh tunnel but it is failing.

I am able to connect from PC to server using Putty outside Dreamweaver. I can open a shell and do anything I want.

I wonder, can it be that the problem is FTP related not SSH? Do I need to open, activate, allow user/ports/daemons for this to work?

I have searched the web for two days and have not found an answer. I hope you guys can help me.

Thank you all in advance!

Is there a firewall between XP and Suse?
If there is one, is there a rule to allow you to access port 21 and the port created by the SSH tunnel?

If FTP is running and there is not firewall, check /etc/ftpusers for a list of users that are denied FTP access.

With regard to SSH on Suse, can you access the port created by the tunnel by just telnet'ing to it from XP?
If you get a blank screen or some garbage then the port is active and XP can connect, so check the Putty 'piggy-back' config to verify that it is using the tunnelled port.

I am able to connect outside Dreamweaver using PuTTy.
There are no firewall between XP and SuSE.

That said, I decided to read through the report generated which is offered to be sent to MS support and found a string of text that said

"Unknown build ... uncompatible version ... "

Which lead me to believe that I was using the wrong version of plink.exe. I then downloaded plink.exe from PuTTy download page and I was able to go further this time.

I am now having problem with FTP connection. I think I now need to figure out how to open FTP between these two units. I understand that it is reconmended to keep FTP off or very restricted so, I guess that "very restricted" is what I need to do.

How can I allow a given user and/or local IP to FTP into my SuSE box?

Use the TCP Wrapper on the Suse box and in the hosts.allow file, add the ip of the Windows machine.
tcpd is installed on most Linux distro's
The link below will help you set it up:
