I want to change the speed and duplex of an SSC card elan port. The book says it defaults to 10MBS Half Duplex. Our cisco switches are set to Auto negotiate but the data guys are seeing errors.

Auto negotiate almost never works on a cisco box.. set the cisco side to 10 meg half and your problems will go away..

if you change the nortel side, it will be unstable.. and it will not work any faster or better..

same as changing an atm from 96K analog to 100 gig.. the data sent is .1 k per transaction.. your not going to get any faster

I suspected that to be the answer but I wanted to make sure I was on the right track. The data guys are going to love this one. Thanks

Yep I was previously at a Cisco shop and the data guys ended up having to hard set devices because we were getting speed/duplex mismatches. I am at a Foundry shop now and things seem to work okay on 'Auto'

You can try forcing the settings on the Cisco but you are probably always going to see errors on the ELAN connection. Ethernet is a CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access With Collision Detection) medium. Collisions are inevitable in the half-duplex environment.
